Obama held a campaign rally in downtown Raleigh at around noon today. From a reconaissance position high atop a nearby skyscraper, my assessment was that the crowd didn’t seem all the impressive, not even filling the outdoor lawn around the candidate. Sure, there were folks still lined up outside of the rally waiting to get it, but it was hardly the turnout I might have expected in the heart of the state’s capital.
Elsewhere in Raleigh, Mike Huckabee dropped by the state GOP headquarters at an event that was hurriedly put together. He was making a whirlwind trip down the East Coast today, headed for Charlotte and then Orlando after his stop in Raleigh. It was evident his job was to boost the morale of the party faithful–those most likely to volunteer in GOTV efforts–in anticipation of a race that will go down to the wire next Tuesday. The hastily gathered crowd overflowed the basement level of the party headquarters building, which isn’t saying all that much, but it was an energetic group obviously still interested in what Huckabee had to say on behalf of McCain-Palin.
Finally, in statewide news for NC, it appears Senator Dole and the NRSCC are hitting Kay Hagan hard for attending an atheist fundraiser. It seems an edgy attack, and Allahpundit and some others at Hot Air will not look upon it too favorably, but it seems to fit within what has been a hard-line conservative vs. liberal campaign. I don’t think I’ve ever heard as strong an anti-illegal immigration ad as the one Senator Dole has run in recent weeks.
